Mouth Breathing and Facial Development

Hi there!

Quick post.

I found this webpage on Mouth Breathing and Facial Development by ButeykoKids. It covers how facial development is affected in children who are mouth breathers. It even mentions keeping the tongue in the proper position against the roof of the mouth with the tip on the alveolar ridge - the spot. Of course, people with ankyloglossia can't do this and are therefore at risk of becoming mouth breathers.

Warning: the website has animated butterflies that follow you when you scroll down. Kind of annoying.

Here also is a link to the article The Long Face Syndrome and Impairment of the Nasopharyngeal Airway, which is referenced in the ButeykoKids page. It's written for medical professionals but I thought it still might be helpful. I have long face syndrome due to mouth breathing pretty much all my life.

The ButeykoKids page lists a ton of references in addition to the above mentioned article including a transcript of an interview with Dr. John Mew, a maverick orthodontist from England who cites bad orthodontia - from his own father - as the reason for his own long face (reference #16)!

Hope you enjoy!

Happy Trails!
